The Revolution of Myspace

Although Myspace was not technically the entity that started social media, one could say that it was the website that changed the world of social media completely from what it had been thought of before. MySpace was founded in 2003 and launched in 2004. Within the first year of launch, there were already 5 million users. Just two years after launching, MySpace had taken the throne for the most visited website in the United States, beating out Google search and Yahoo! Mail. The social media giant peaked finally in July of 2008 with a grand total of 75.9 million visitors. MySpace later began to struggle after being passed by Facebook and started laying off many of its employees and was eventually bought out by another company.

Today, MySpace has been revamped to mainly to be used for music. Although it is not quite as popular as it once was, MySpace can always would thought of as the one who put social media on the map for good.
I'm sure that Tom would be proud!

  1. I remember when I first made my MySpace! I used to check it nonstop, always updating my page and changing my songs. It was a great website but, definitely got boring after awhile. I rarely even get on Facebook now. I prefer Twitter or Instagram now because of the timeline. It's just easier I think.

  2. I use to love myspace, but I switched to facebook when it started to have a lot of the same features if not more than myspace. Even though I no longer use my facebook I do miss the fact that music is not as prevalent on facebook as it was on myspace. So it makes since for myspace to reinvent itself by focusing more on music.

  3. I don't think there is a person in our generation that did not use MySpace. It was pretty cool deciding where people stood in their friendships by seeing where they ranked in someone's top 8. In my opinion, MySpace did change the social media world by starting a new trend that can be evolved.

  4. I think that most, if not all social networking websites will peak and then fade away the way that MySpace has. Though there are still millions of users, it's nothing compared to its peak. As new social networking sites are created, they typically build upon the layout of previous sites, and this is why these sites come and go. However, there are few sites that have found the success that MySpace once had.

  5. I believe now that technology is so involved in everything in the world now that the social media sites today will not peak and burn out like MySpace did. When I had a MySpace, aside from people trying to get their music out to the public, I didn't really ever see any other businesses with profiles. It seems today that businesses use each and every social media site as advertisement of their company and thus I believe it will keep these social media sites alive because they are used so much.

  6. I remember using myspace in middle school. My page was filled with glittery care bear clipart and crappy music. Myspace was funny. I remember people were so concerned with updating their profiles and who was on their top ten friends list. I am so glad that I don't waste my time on myspace anymore.

  7. Gah those were the good 'ole days when it was your goal to have the best background and have the best song when someone visited your page. Not to mention it would cause a major fight between yourself and friends if they weren't placed on your top 8 like they thought they should be. Myspace was great!

  8. Just wan to share a interesting fact: Thursday is the day mySpace gets the most visits any given week. For a period, its administrators couldn't understand why that day. Eventually, the reason was found: throwback Thursday #tbt. Because of this internet theme, many Facebook and Twitter users go on mySpace every Thursday to get old pictures of themselves and friends.

  9. Triet Pham makes a good observation. I remember having a myspace in middle school. There is something cool about picking out your own backround and customizing music. Myspace actually taught me about coding of all things with backgrounds. It was also my first learning experience of what you put on the internet everyone can see so be careful.

  10. I loved Myspace. I loved the creativity it allowed for my profile. I could change my layout to how I want, move my about me section, make my comments private, add comment boxes, display my page with icons, I just loved it. This was also a reason I never liked Facebook because it wasn't very personal. It was "personally" in your business, seeing that I saw when people got in relationships, new jobs, etc. but as far as personalizing my page, I hated the standard look. Myspace has recently disappointed me. I logged into my Myspace to retrieve some old photos like Triet mentioned above only to find out that Myspace had deleted them all but my default photo. These were pictures I don't have on my current laptop, and there reason for doing so was to create more space or something like that. So for that reason, if Myspace ever made a comeback, I will not return.
